What are Thursday Discovery Scouts?

The 29th Glasgow has two Scout Troops catering for boys and girls in the age range of 10½ to 14. We call them “Discovery” Scouts as we provide a programme based on Land and Sea Scouting. Within the Discovery Scouts you will find opportunities to camp, hike, sail, ski, kayak, climb, powerboat, mountain bike as well as all the traditional Scout activities.

The weekly meetings are held in our Scout Halls and run from 7.00pm till 8.45pm.

The Thursday night Discovery Scout section allows our members the opportunity to meet new friends, try new activities and learn new skills. Our programme centres around lots of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, rock-climbing and abseiling, mountain biking, sailing, power boating, skiing and kayaking. We have several camps throughout the year as well as activity days for our Scouts to try these fun sports.  To go sailing just go to the home page and click on the sailing boat to book a place, no experiance is necessary.

These events run alongside our weekly programme that involves playing games, creative projects, learning about our community and the world we live in, fitness nights, as well as more traditional Scout skills, like map reading, knots and pioneering and first aid. We also have several trips throughout the year to places of interest and our annual Christmas party night.

Thursday Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, camping, sailing, hiking, expeditions overseas, photography, sailing, geocaching, climbing, curling, skiing, canoeing, gorge walking, high ropes course, raft building, pony trekking, skating, and mountain biking. As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, computer programming, or even how to drive a boat at 30 miles an hour. There’s something for every young person. We also have indoor activities including crafts and our famous Christmas Dinner camp. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.

You need no previous experience to start undertaking the adventurous activities.  We have an adult Leadership team with the qualifications to deliver.

Our weekly Thursday night meetings include games for fun as well as instruction and teamwork in preparation for the activities above.  The Thursday Troop has undertaken all of the activities mentioned above and even more.

For over 70 activities you can gain badges.  In addition there are Challenge Awards.  Gain all of the 9 Challenges and you will qualify for the Chief Scout’s Gold Award.  Over the past 2 years over 20 Thursday Scouts have achieved their Chief Scouts Gold Award.  Everyone joining the Troop should leave with this the highest award in the Scout Section.
